Respecting Your Roommate
Whether your roommate is your best friend or a complete stranger, roommates share a special dependency that can only be upheld with clear communication and mutual respect. In order to avoid conflict, make sure you have both agreed on your responsiblities regarding the following topics:
- Study habits and environment
- Cleanliness
- Food/Grocery policy
- Household items
- Sharing personal belongings
- Privacy
- Visitors
- Smoking, drinking, and drugs
- Relationships
- Criminal record
- Proof of payment
- Separate leases
- Lease term
- Rent
- Utilities and other services
If conflict does arise, discuss it with your roommate at a convenient time and in a comfortable space. Make sure everyone has the opportunity to express their frustrations and listen attentively. Avoid placing blame or resorting to verbal attacks, rather work toward a constructive resolution that works for both of you.
